Škoda Inaugurates New BEV Battery Assembly Facility

Škoda Auto has officially inaugurated its new BEV battery assembly facility in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic, marking another significant milestone in the brand’s electrification strategy.

  • The EUR 205 million investment in battery production reinforces the strategic importance of Škoda’s Mladá Boleslav plant and enhances synergies within the Brand Group Core.
  • The facility strengthens the European battery value chain, ensuring a stable supply of battery systems for vehicle models across multiple brands within the Group.
  • Built in less than one year, the new 55,000 m² facility is capable of assembling one battery pack every 60 seconds, achieving a production capacity of more than 1,100 units per day and up to 335,000 units annually.
  • The inauguration ceremony was attended by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček.

Mladá Boleslav, February 27, 2026 – Škoda has invested EUR 205 million to expand battery production in Mladá Boleslav, becoming the largest BEV battery system manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group. This inauguration forms part of the Volkswagen Group’s comprehensive battery strategy, balancing in-house and third-party cell and battery system supply to maximize flexibility while ensuring continuous access to innovation, advanced technologies, and resilient supply chains.

At the same time, Škoda’s main plant has become the first facility within the Volkswagen Group in Europe to manufacture cell-to-pack battery systems for high-volume electric vehicles. With a production capacity exceeding 1,100 cell-to-pack battery systems per day and up to 335,000 units annually, the plant will accelerate the deployment of new technologies in close cooperation with the Volkswagen Group’s Battery Center of Excellence.

Today’s event further strengthens Škoda’s role as a component manufacturer within the Brand Group Core while enhancing the Czech Republic’s position as a major automotive manufacturing hub in Europe, with Škoda serving as a key driving force behind regional electrification.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček, Chairman of the Škoda Supervisory Board, Member of the Volkswagen Group Board of Management and Volkswagen Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer, along with members of the Škoda Auto Board of Management.

Thomas Schäfer emphasized:

"With this investment, Škoda has become the largest BEV battery system manufacturer within the Volkswagen Group and a central pillar of our electrification strategy. The Mladá Boleslav plant operates on a truly industrial scale and further strengthens the European battery value chain. Škoda’s expertise, efficiency, and distinctive spirit make the brand a key driving force in the transformation of the Brand Group Core."

Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto, shared:

"This marks a major milestone for Škoda Auto in our commitment to decarbonizing the entire value chain. Emission reduction does not stop at the vehicle itself, but also includes sourcing, manufacturing, and energy consumption. The launch of our new battery system assembly line enables us to localize large-scale battery production, strengthen a more sustainable and competitive European value chain, and bring electric mobility closer to customers.

As a member of the Brand Group Core, we are proud to contribute our industrial capabilities and expertise to the alliance of volume brands shaping the future of sustainable mobility. We are grateful to the Volkswagen Group for entrusting us with supplying up to 335,000 battery systems annually for electrified powertrains across the Group.

At the same time, we are doubling Škoda’s BEV portfolio and transforming our facilities toward greener energy solutions, including the conversion of our central power plant from coal to biomass, which will help reduce approximately 274,000 tonnes of CO₂ by 2027.

The development of large-scale battery production capabilities and the acceleration of electrification demonstrate our responsibility toward a sustainable future for Škoda Auto, the Czech Republic, and Europe."

Andreas Dick, Board Member for Production and Logistics, stated:

"Since 2019, we have produced approximately 1.4 million battery systems in Mladá Boleslav. The launch of cell-to-pack battery production here marks the next step in internalizing a key part of the manufacturing process. With an automation rate of around 84%, supported by 131 industrial robots and a 60-second production cycle for each battery system, we are able to ensure high daily output with consistently stable quality.

We are helping secure the supply of advanced battery systems ‘made in Europe’ for high-volume vehicle models within the Brand Group Core. This achievement is a strong recognition of the dedication and expertise of our teams, while also demonstrating our long-term commitment to the Czech Republic as one of Europe’s key automotive manufacturing hubs."
